Project Objectives

This project aims to provide under-represented candidates from lower income countries across sub-Saharan Africa a foundation of skills to effectively and sustainably address global health challenges. With the MSc in International Health and Tropical Medicine, we will support candidates to critically engage with existing evidence, identify evidence gaps, and generate evidence where needed. We will concurrently develop the soft skills required to use that evidence to affect positive change locally and globally. This includes written and oral communication with different audiences, negotiation, stakeholder management, teamwork and team management. Our candidates will receive debate training, media training, as well as training in critical thinking and practical reasoning. They will have the opportunity to practice their skills by presenting policy briefs to UK policymakers at the Houses of Parliament, delivering a public debate at the Oxford Union, and undertaking a research placement. For the placements, we will extend students’ exposure and opportunities for sharing of expertise and experience, for example, by sending our African students to Asia and vice-versa to collaborate with our partners undertaking global health research in those contexts. Subsequent to completing the MSc, competitively selected candidates will undertake a six month policy internship placement. These will be aligned to the list collated in collaboration with the EDCTP Association and ongoing academic support will be facilitated by the Pandemic Science Institute Policy and Practice Research Group. In sum, this initiative aims to strengthen human capacity in the field of global health leadership in lower income countries across sub-Saharan Africa. We will contribute to the development of leaders with grounded experience of the pervasive health challenges and a vision to affect change. They will be creative, multi-disciplinary problem solvers, effective communicators and constructive team players.
