There is an increased prevalence of periodontitis in patients with hypertension, and oral microbiome dysbiosis during periodontitis might be a factor contributing to hypertension. To assess whether periodontitis constitute a risk factor with hypertension among adults in Rwanda
Quantitative
Cardiovascular disease causes majority of deaths worldwide, with 11.3% of these occurring in Africa. In Rwanda, 36% of total deaths are due to noncommunicable diseases. Hypertension, is a leading risk factor of cardiovascular disease. Pharmacological treatments are currently failing to treat the hypertension chronically. Hypertension treatment is thus increasing the burden of finance on health systems worldwide and thus alternative approaches to prevention and treatment are urgently required. Several hypotheses exist for this, including that periodontal disease induces the entrance of bacteria into circulatory system, in turn activating a host systemic inflammatory response. A healthy oral microbiome is also essential for promoting systemic health while oral dysbiosis may lead to hypertension.
