Viral Acute Respiratory Infections in AFRICA
The overarching goal of VARIAFRICA (Viral Acute Respiratory Infections in AFRICA) is to build an investigator network on Acute Lower Respiratory Infections (ALRI) in Africa. There are substantial gaps in data on the burden of ALRI in sub-Saharan Africa. The ALRI burden attributed to the sub-Saharan Africa is thus associated with an increased uncertainty and is a likely under-estimate of the true burden. We believe that synergistic work by experts from Africa could contribute to the production of relevant data on ALRI and thus reduce the existing uncertainty. The fellowship aims at gaining training and expertise in evidence synthesis specifically through systematic reviews and use these to estimate ALRI burden in Africa. The fellowship will also provide for training and skills development in writing grants and manuscripts and public communication of science. Finally, one of the key deliverables of this fellowship would be the development of an ALRI investigator group in Africa.
Therefore we propose the following specific aims: Aim 1: To train in evidence synthesis using systematic reviews to estimate disease burden at national and regional levels. Aim 2: to develop skills in writing successful grant proposals and manuscripts and in public dissemination of scientific results. Aim 3: to build a newtwork of African investigators working on ALRI . Significance: The research networks have proved their relevance in the progress of research work throughout the world and more particularly in the industrialized countries. Systematic reviews have also proven their relevance in most fields for the synthesis of existing data and the identification of information ga
